We caught up with David to learn more about his background, inspiration and the collection he has created exclusively for Kindred.

Can you tell us a bit about your design background and how you came to start your own brand?

“Before striking out on my own, I spent 15 years as the most shabbily dressed designer and art director in the history of the fashion industry. Eventually I took a round of layoffs as an opportunity to start designing for myself, and yet somehow I still can’t stand my boss.”

How would you describe your creative style?

“I’m interested in boiling ideas down to just a few bold, interesting shapes, the aim of this brevity being to lend a certain immediacy and impactfulness. I also put the same pair of googly-eyes on every drawing.”

Where do you get your creative inspiration from?

“My work has been inspired by Mel Brooks, mid-century French poster art, and my deeply unhealthy relationship with baked goods.”

Where did the inspiration for the Kindred collection come from?

“I think my Kindred collection was partly inspired by the way many of us utilise humour to make displays of affection go down easier.”

If you had to pick, which is your favourite design?

“One of my favourites is ‘Your Birthday Is Duly Noted’, which parodies the kind of stiff upper lip that no amount of ChapStick can mitigate.”
